NCERT Solutions for Class 5 Maths Chapter 7: Shapes and Patterns
What this chapter teaches.
Weaving patterns using paper strips; types of triangles (isosceles — two equal sides, equilateral — three equal sides, scalene — no equal sides) and quadrilaterals (kite, parallelogram, rectangle); tessellation — covering a surface with repeating shapes with no gaps or overlaps (like hexagons, which fit together using 120-degree angles); and identifying 3D shapes such as an icosahedron (20 faces) and dodecahedron (12 faces).
Activity 1 — Paper Strip Weaving.
Children weave coloured paper strips over-under-over to create patterns, discovering symmetry and repetition.
Activity 2 — Sort the Triangles.
Given a set of triangles, children measure or compare sides to sort them into isosceles, equilateral, and scalene.
Activity 3 — Tessellation on Grid Paper.
Children try covering a grid with a repeating shape (like a hexagon or triangle) with no gaps, discovering which shapes tessellate and which don’t.
Why This Chapter Matters
Recognising 2D and 3D shape properties and how shapes tile together builds spatial reasoning used in geometry, art, architecture, and design.
How to Use These Solutions
Try the paper-weaving and tessellation activities with real paper and scissors — hands-on shape work builds much stronger understanding than diagrams alone. Download the full chapter from our Class 5 Maths NCERT book page, or browse the Class 5 hub.
