NCERT Solutions for Class 5 Maths Chapter 11: Grandmother’s Quilt

What this chapter teaches.
Perimeter — the total length around the outside of a shape (sum of all sides); area — the amount of surface a shape covers, measured by counting unit squares on a grid; the formula Area = length × breadth for rectangles; and the formula Perimeter = sum of all sides (2 × (length + breadth) for a rectangle); and applying these ideas to quilt-piece tiling problems.

Activity 1 — Count the Squares.
Children count unit squares covered by a quilt-piece shape on grid paper to find its area directly.

Activity 2 — Measure the Border.
Children add up all the side lengths of a quilt piece to find its perimeter.

Activity 3 — Design a Quilt.
Children design their own quilt pattern from smaller square/rectangular pieces and calculate the total area covered.

Why This Chapter Matters

Area and perimeter are foundational geometry concepts used in everything from flooring and fencing to fabric and land measurement.

How to Use These Solutions

Use squared/graph paper to practise counting squares for area before jumping to the length × breadth formula — this builds real understanding, not just memorised formulas. Download the full chapter from our Class 5 Maths NCERT book page, or browse the Class 5 hub.
