What this chapter teaches.
A full turn (going all the way around back to the start), a half turn (halfway around), and a quarter turn (a quarter of the way around); clockwise and anticlockwise turning directions; how angles are formed by turning — a right angle is a quarter turn, a straight angle is a half turn; and identifying acute, right, obtuse, and straight angles in real objects.

Activity 1 — The Statue Game.
Children physically turn a quarter, half, or full turn on the word “go” and freeze like a statue, building a bodily sense of what each turn looks like.

Activity 2 — Clock Hand Turns.
Children look at a clock and describe how far the minute hand turns between two times (for example, from 12 to 3 is a quarter turn).

Activity 3 — Paper Fan Angles.
Making a paper fan and opening it by different amounts helps children see acute, right, and obtuse angles forming as the fan opens wider.
