NCERT Solutions for Class 1 Maths Chapter 2: What is Long? What is Round?

What this chapter teaches.
Children learn to look at everyday objects and sort them into “long” things and “round” things, and to compare two long objects to say which is longer or shorter. This is the first step toward measurement, which the book builds on later with handspans and other units.

Activity 1 — Find the Long Things.
The textbook shows a picture with several objects and asks children to point out or tick the long ones (for example, a ladder, a pencil, a snake). As with picture-based activities, work through the actual picture in the book together, asking “Does this object stretch out much more in one direction than the other?” — if yes, it is long.

Activity 2 — Find the Round Things.
Similarly, children identify round objects in a picture (a ball, a wheel, a coin, the sun). A round object looks the same all around its edge, with no straight sides or corners.

Activity 3 — Longer or Shorter?
Children compare two long objects placed side by side (for example, two pencils, or two ribbons) and say which one is longer and which is shorter. This can be done directly at home: place any two long household objects next to each other, lining up one end, and ask the child which one reaches further.

Why This Chapter Matters

“Long” and “round” are a child’s first vocabulary for describing shape and size, and “longer/shorter” is the first comparison skill in measurement — both come back throughout Class 1 Maths (Lina’s Family, later in the book, builds directly on this with handspan measurement).

How to Use These Solutions

Work through the picture activities together using the language above, then try the longer/shorter comparison with real objects at home. Download the full chapter from our Class 1 Maths NCERT book page, or browse the Class 1 hub.
