NCERT Solutions for Class 1 Maths Chapter 6: Vegetable Farm

What this chapter teaches.
Sorting objects by type, colour, or size; counting, adding, and subtracting with totals up to 20 (larger than the up-to-10 range used earlier); and simple word-problem style scenarios, such as a potter making and selling diyas (small clay lamps), used to practise subtraction.

Activity 1 — Sort the Vegetables.
Children are shown a mixed picture of vegetables and asked to sort them into groups — for example, by colour (all the red ones, all the green ones) or by type (all the carrots, all the tomatoes). Work through the actual picture together, naming each vegetable and its group out loud.

Activity 2 — Stack and Count.
As vegetables come in from the farm, children count and add them up as the pile grows, practising addition with totals up to 20.

Activity 3 — The Potter’s Diyas (Subtraction).
In this scenario, a potter starts with a certain number of diyas and sells some — children practise subtraction by finding how many diyas are left after some are sold.

Why This Chapter Matters

Extending addition and subtraction from 10 to 20 is an important step in number confidence, and sorting/classifying is an early foundation for later data-handling work (which reappears in Chapter 13, So Many Toys).

How to Use These Solutions

Practise addition and subtraction with totals between 11 and 20 using two hands’ worth of fingers or small objects, and try simple sorting games at home (sort fruit, toys, or clothes by colour or type). Download the full chapter from our Class 1 Maths NCERT book page, or browse the Class 1 hub.
