Chapter 4 of Class 1 Joyful Mathematics, Making 10, focuses entirely on the number 10 — children explore every pair of numbers that add up to 10, which is a key foundation for the base-ten number system used in all later arithmetic.

NCERT Solutions for Class 1 Maths Chapter 4: Making 10
What this chapter teaches.
All the number pairs that combine to make 10 (0+10, 1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6, 5+5, and their reverses), using real objects (ladybugs, buttons, counters) and a ten-frame — a simple 2×5 grid used to visually show how many more are needed to reach 10.
Activity 1 — Fill the Ten-Frame.
Children are shown a ten-frame with some boxes already filled and asked how many more are needed to make 10. If 6 boxes are filled, 4 more are needed (6 + 4 = 10). Work through this with any 10-box grid drawn on paper, or 10 small objects laid out in two rows of 5.
Activity 2 — Number Pairs for 10.
Children find and match pairs of numbers that add to 10 — for example, matching a card showing “3” with a card showing “7”. All the pairs are: 0+10, 1+9, 2+8, 3+7, 4+6, and 5+5 (each also works in reverse, e.g. 9+1).
Activity 3 — Grouping Objects into 10.
Children count out a set of small objects (marbles, sticks, flowers) into groups of 10, which builds the habit of counting in tens — useful later for two-digit numbers.
Why This Chapter Matters
Knowing all the pairs that make 10 by heart is one of the most important early-arithmetic skills — it is the basis for later addition and subtraction with carrying/borrowing, and for understanding place value (tens and ones) in two-digit numbers.
How to Use These Solutions
Practise the number pairs regularly with real objects until the child can say them quickly (“3 and 7 make 10”). Download the full chapter from our Class 1 Maths NCERT book page, or browse the Class 1 hub.
