What this chapter teaches.
Comparing height (tallest = the person with the maximum height in a group; shortest = the minimum height); comparing distance (nearest = shortest distance; farthest = greatest distance); using a handspan (the distance from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the smallest finger when the hand is stretched out) to measure the length of things like a table or a book; using fingers to measure smaller things, like the width of a bottle; and comparing weight (heavier/lighter).
Activity 1 — Tallest and Shortest.
Children look at a family (Lina’s family, in the book) and identify who is tallest and who is shortest. At home, this can be tried directly: line up family members against a wall and mark heights, or simply compare standing next to each other.
Activity 2 — Measure with Your Handspan.
Children measure real objects (a table, a book, a notebook) using their own handspan, counting how many handspans long the object is. This is a genuinely answerable, hands-on activity — the answer depends on the child’s own hand size and the object measured, so there is no single fixed number; the goal is doing the measuring correctly (placing the hand flat, counting each handspan without gaps or overlaps).
Activity 3 — Nearest and Farthest.
Children look at a picture (or real room) and say which of two or three things is nearest to them and which is farthest.
Activity 4 — Heavier and Lighter.
Children compare two objects by holding one in each hand (or using a simple balance) to say which feels heavier and which feels lighter.

This is the first formal measurement chapter — height, distance, length (handspan), and weight are all everyday, practical skills, and using non-standard units like the handspan builds understanding before children move to standard units (like centimetres) in later classes.
