Chapter 8 of Class 11 Biology is Cell: The Unit of Life. It establishes cell theory and covers the structure and function of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and their organelles. These Class 11 Biology Chapter 8 solutions are also useful as quick revision notes before exams.
Cell Theory
Proposed by Schleiden and Schwann (all organisms are composed of cells), extended by Rudolf Virchow (all cells arise from pre-existing cells, “Omnis cellula-e cellula”). The cell is the structural and functional unit of life.
Prokaryotic Cells
Lack a membrane-bound nucleus and most membrane-bound organelles. Genetic material (nucleoid) lies free in the cytoplasm. Contain ribosomes (70S) and sometimes plasmids, mesosomes, and inclusion bodies.
Eukaryotic Cells
Have a well-defined, membrane-bound nucleus and membrane-bound organelles (mitochondria, ER, Golgi, etc.). Ribosomes are 80S (in cytoplasm) and 70S (in mitochondria/chloroplasts).
Cell Membrane and Cell Wall
Plasma membrane: selectively permeable, fluid mosaic model (Singer & Nicolson) of phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins. Cell wall: rigid, non-living layer outside the membrane in plants (cellulose) and fungi (chitin), providing shape and protection.
Key Organelles
Nucleus: contains genetic material (DNA), controls cell activities. Endoplasmic reticulum: rough (protein synthesis) or smooth (lipid synthesis). Golgi apparatus: packaging/modification/secretion. Mitochondria: “powerhouse of the cell”, ATP synthesis via respiration. Chloroplast: site of photosynthesis (plants). Lysosomes: “suicide bags”, intracellular digestion. Vacuoles: storage (large central vacuole in plant cells for turgor pressure).
Ribosomes and Cytoskeleton
Ribosomes are the site of protein synthesis, free or attached to rough ER. The cytoskeleton (microtubules, microfilaments, intermediate filaments) provides mechanical support, motility, and shape.
