NCERT Extra Questions for Class 5 Maths Chapter 11: Grandmother’s Quilt – Free PDF Download

Chapter 11, Grandmother’s Quilt, introduces area (the surface covered by a shape) and perimeter (the distance around its boundary) using patchwork quilt pieces. These questions apply both ideas to simple rectangles and squares.

Practice Questions

Q1. A rectangular quilt patch measures 6 cm by 4 cm. Find its area.
Area = 6 × 4 = 24 sq cm.

Q2. Find the perimeter of the same 6 cm by 4 cm patch.
Perimeter = 2 × (6 + 4) = 20 cm.

Q3. A square patch has a side of 5 cm. Find its area and perimeter.
Area = 5 × 5 = 25 sq cm; perimeter = 4 × 5 = 20 cm.

Q4. Two rectangular patches, each 8 cm by 3 cm, are stitched together along one 3 cm side to form a longer rectangle. Find the new area and perimeter.
The combined patch is 16 cm by 3 cm: area = 16 × 3 = 48 sq cm (matching the sum of the two original areas, 24 + 24); perimeter = 2 × (16 + 3) = 38 cm.

Q5. A quilt border needs thread to go all the way around a patch measuring 10 cm by 7 cm. How much thread (perimeter) is needed?
Perimeter = 2 × (10 + 7) = 34 cm.

Why These Help

Area and perimeter decide how much fabric, paint or fencing a real job needs, and quilting is a natural, hands-on way to see that joining shapes changes perimeter differently from how it changes area.
