NCERT Textbook Questions and Answers – Chapter 1: Living Together
Below are the actual named question sections from the chapter — Write, Activity, Discuss and Let Us Reflect — with complete answers, so you can match them directly to your textbook.
Write (Page 4)
Q: Look at the picture of Chandan’s village. What do you see in the picture? Describe below.
A: The picture shows a village with fields, a large banyan tree where elders sit and talk, children playing, rows of houses, a post office, a pond, a well, a small shop, and roads connecting all these places to one another.
Activity 1 (Page 4)
Q: Explore your locality; observe the people and places around you. Write your observations about how the people and places you see are connected to each other in the table given below.
A: Sample observations: the shopkeeper depends on the road to get supplies delivered; the school depends on students and teachers from nearby houses; the health centre serves people from the whole neighbourhood; the police station keeps the roads and market safe so people can move around freely.
Discuss (Page 5)
Q1: Why do you think it is important to have places like parks, schools, hospitals and bus stops in your locality?
A: These places meet everyday needs of the community — parks give space to play and relax, schools provide education, hospitals give medical care when someone is sick or injured, and bus stops help people travel to work, school, and other places easily.
Q2: How would life be different if one or more of these places in your locality did not exist?
A: Without a school nearby, children would have to travel far to study; without a hospital, getting quick medical help in an emergency would be difficult; without a park, there would be no open space to play; without a bus stop, people would find it harder to travel to work or the market.
Q3: What can you do to keep these places clean and safe?
A: We can avoid littering, use dustbins, not damage public property, plant and take care of trees, follow safety rules, and gently remind others to do the same.
Activity 2 (Page 6)
Q: Let us create a colourful poster to help Chandan and his friends invite people from their neighbourhood to participate in the Van Mahotsav.
A: The poster should include a catchy title such as “Join Us for Van Mahotsav!”, the date, time and place of the tree-planting event, a request to bring a sapling or gardening tools, and colourful drawings of trees, leaves and people planting saplings together.
Activity 3 (Pages 7–8)
Q1: Identify the people who help in maintaining your locality. What are their occupations?
A: Sweepers and sanitation workers keep the streets clean; gardeners maintain parks and trees; electricians repair streetlights and wiring; plumbers fix water pipes; security guards and police keep the area safe; municipal workers manage garbage collection and repairs.
Q2: Look at the table below. List different kinds of work required for developing and maintaining the park. Also, mention the material, tools and skills.
A: Sample answer — Planting trees: needs saplings, spades, watering cans, and gardening skill. Fixing benches: needs wood/iron, nails, hammer, and carpentry skill. Cleaning the park: needs brooms, dustbins, and regular effort. Repairing swings: needs iron rods, paint, welding tools, and technical skill.
Q3: Find out from your family members or neighbours about their work. What questions would you ask them?
A: Sample questions: “What do you like most about your work?” “What tools or equipment do you use?” “What challenges do you face while doing this work?” “How did you learn this skill?” “How does your work help our community?”
Discuss (Page 10)
Q1: It is important for communities to come together in times of need. What do you think about this statement?
A: This statement is true — when people come together during floods, illness, or other difficulties, problems get solved faster, resources are shared, and everyone feels supported and safe.
Q2: Do people in your locality come together and support each other? Can you remember one such occasion?
A: Sample answer: Yes — during heavy rains and flooding in our area, neighbours helped each other move belongings to safety, shared food and shelter, and worked together to clean up once the water receded.
Write (Page 11)
Q: Think about your family or community. How do you work together to help each other while preparing for a festival or any other occasion?
A: Sample answer: During Diwali, everyone in the family shares tasks — some clean and decorate the house, some help with cooking sweets, some go shopping, and neighbours often share sweets and help each other with decorations too.
Discuss (Page 13)
Q1: What are some of the ways by which we can take care of nature and our neighbourhood? List a few.
A: Planting trees, not wasting water and electricity, throwing garbage only in dustbins, avoiding single-use plastic, keeping parks and streets clean, and caring for the plants and animals around us.
Q2: How does helping others and working together make our community better?
A: Working together builds trust and friendship, solves problems more quickly, makes the neighbourhood safer and cleaner, and creates a sense of belonging where everyone looks out for one another.
Let Us Reflect (Pages 13–16)
(This end-of-chapter section combines written questions and hands-on class activities; the questions below are given as closely as they appear in the textbook — exact page wording should still be cross-checked against your physical copy.)
Q1: Write the different roles people play in your school — teachers, students, caretakers, bus drivers, etc.
A: Teachers teach and guide students; the principal manages the school; bus drivers safely transport students; caretakers and sweepers keep the school clean; office staff handle admissions and records; canteen staff prepare food; security guards keep the school safe.
(a) Why is it important for everyone to work as a team in a school?
A: Because a school runs smoothly only when teaching, cleaning, safety, transport and administration all work together — teamwork creates a safe and effective place to learn.
(b) What is your role as a member of your school community?
A: As a student, my role is to attend classes regularly, complete my work, follow school rules, keep the school clean, be kind to classmates, and help wherever I can.
Q2: Form small groups of 4–5 students. Choose one fun activity to perform from the list: (a) Tree plantation (b) Cleanliness drive (c) Making artefacts with materials from nature.
A: This is a hands-on group activity to be carried out in class or the school ground, followed by recording what was done and what was learnt.
Q3: Match the riddles with their solutions hidden in the pictures.
A: (a) “I am a place where people wait, to catch a ride and not be late…” — Bus stop. (b) “I keep letters far and near, with stamps and parcels waiting here…” — Post office. (c) “I am full of colours, lights, sounds of feet…” — Market. (d) “I am a place where you run and play, with swings and slides to enjoy your day…” — Playground/Park.
Q4: As a group, identify one thing your locality needs to improve, plan an activity for it, and note down its impact.
A: Sample answer: Our locality needs more dustbins near the park. As a class activity, we can make a request poster and place a few extra bins with the help of the local municipal office, then observe whether littering reduces over the following weeks.
Q5: Ask your family about any one special skill or craft (for example — basket making, wall painting, pottery) that is famous in your region.
A: Sample answer: In our region, clay pottery is a well-known craft — potters shape wet clay on a wheel, let it dry, and then bake it in a kiln (an oven for firing clay) to make strong, useful pots and diyas.
