NCERT Solutions for Class 4 Maths Chapter 14: Data Handling
What this chapter teaches.
Tally marks — a quick way of recording counts using single strokes, with every 5th stroke crossing the previous 4 to make a group of 5; pictographs — using a picture or symbol to represent a certain number of items, with a key explaining what the picture stands for; bar graphs — using bars of different heights/lengths to show and compare quantities; and asking the right questions to collect and organise data (like “what is everyone’s favourite flavour?”).
Activity 1 — Collect and Tally.
Children ask a question (like favourite subject or favourite gola flavour) to their classmates and record the answers using tally marks, grouped in 5s.
Activity 2 — Read the Pictograph.
Given a pictograph with a key (e.g. 1 picture = 2 people), children read off the actual quantities represented and answer comparison questions.
Activity 3 — Draw and Read a Bar Graph.
Using tally or pictograph data, children draw a simple bar graph, then answer questions like “which category has the most/fewest?”
Why This Chapter Matters
As the final chapter, Data Handling brings together counting and comparison skills from across the year into real data-representation tools — tally marks, pictographs, and bar graphs — that are used throughout school and everyday life to make sense of information.
How to Use These Solutions
Try a real mini-survey at home (favourite fruit, favourite colour among family members) and practise recording it with tally marks, then drawing a simple bar graph. Download the full chapter from our Class 4 Maths NCERT book page, or browse the Class 4 hub.
