What this chapter teaches.
Children learn to name and recognise five basic 3D shapes by matching them to familiar objects: a cube (like a dice or a small box with equal sides), a cuboid (like a book or a brick), a sphere (like a ball or an orange), a cylinder (like a can or a rolling pin), and a cone (like an ice-cream cone or a party hat). They also learn which shapes can roll and which can only slide, based on whether they have flat or curved surfaces.

Activity 1 — Sort the Shapes.
The textbook shows a collection of household and classroom objects and asks children to sort them by shape. Go through real objects at home — a dice, a box, a ball, a can, a cone-shaped cap — and name the shape of each one out loud.

Activity 2 — Roll or Slide?.
Children test which shapes roll easily (sphere, cylinder) and which do not (cube, cuboid), and discuss why — shapes with curved surfaces roll, shapes with only flat surfaces do not. Try this at home with a ball versus a small box on a tilted book.

Activity 3 — Building with Shapes.
Children use blocks of different 3D shapes to build simple structures (like a toy tower using cuboids and cylinders) and talk about which shapes stack well and which do not.

Activity 4 — Shape Hunt.
A hunt around the classroom or home for objects matching each of the five shapes, encouraging the child to point out multiple real-world examples for each shape rather than just the ones shown in the book.
