What this chapter teaches.
Children add and subtract two-digit numbers using festival-themed word problems: how many flowers are needed for two garlands, how many sweets are left after distributing some, and so on. The chapter introduces regrouping — carrying over to the tens place in addition when the ones add up to 10 or more, and borrowing from the tens place in subtraction when the ones digit being subtracted is bigger.

Activity 1 — Adding Without Regrouping.
Simple two-digit addition where the ones digits add up to less than 10 (for example, 23 + 14 = 37). Children practise lining up tens and ones correctly before adding.

Activity 2 — Adding With Regrouping.
Two-digit addition where the ones digits add up to 10 or more, requiring a carry to the tens place (for example, 27 + 15: 7+5=12, write 2 and carry 1 ten, then 2+1+1=4, giving 42). This is usually the trickiest new idea in the chapter and benefits from step-by-step practice.

Activity 3 — Subtracting Without Regrouping.
Two-digit subtraction where the ones digit on top is bigger than the ones digit being subtracted (for example, 38 – 15 = 23).

Activity 4 — Subtracting With Regrouping.
Two-digit subtraction where borrowing from the tens place is needed (for example, 42 – 15: since 2 is less than 5, borrow a ten to make it 12-5=7, then 3-1=2, giving 27).

Why This Chapter Matters

Two-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping are core arithmetic skills used throughout the rest of primary school — getting comfortable with carrying and borrowing here makes three-digit and larger calculations in Class 3 much easier.

How to Use These Solutions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is regrouping in addition?
When the ones digits of two numbers add up to 10 or more, you write down the ones part and carry the extra ten over to the tens column.

What is regrouping (borrowing) in subtraction?
When the ones digit you are subtracting is bigger than the ones digit on top, you borrow one ten from the tens column to make the subtraction possible.
