What this chapter teaches.
Children explore two related ideas: making equal groups of a given size and counting the total (an early form of multiplication — for example, 4 groups of 3 sweets is 12 sweets), and sharing a total equally among a number of people or groups (an early form of division — for example, sharing 12 sweets equally among 4 friends gives 3 each). Both ideas are explored through hands-on counting and sharing, not written multiplication/division sums.

Activity 1 — Making Equal Groups.
Children arrange a set of objects into equal-sized groups and count the total by adding the group sizes repeatedly (for example, 3 groups of 4 = 4+4+4 = 12). This is the seed of multiplication.

Activity 2 — Sharing Equally.
Children share a total number of objects equally among a given number of people, one at a time in a round-robin fashion, until nothing is left (or noting what is left over). For example, sharing 10 candies among 2 friends gives 5 each.

Activity 3 — Equal or Not?.
Children check whether a given sharing is fair (equal) by comparing the piles — if one person got more than another, it was not shared equally, and children practise redistributing to make it fair.

Activity 4 — Grouping Story Problems.
Simple word problems using grouping and sharing in everyday contexts, like packing biscuits into boxes of equal size, or distributing pencils equally in class.
