What this chapter teaches.
Children learn to name and recognise five basic 3D shapes by matching them to familiar objects: a cube (like a dice or a small box with equal sides), a cuboid (like a book or a brick), a sphere (like a ball or an orange), a cylinder (like a can or a rolling pin), and a cone (like an ice-cream cone or a party hat). They also learn which shapes can roll and which can only slide, based on whether they have flat or curved surfaces.

Activity 1 — Sort the Shapes.
The textbook shows a collection of household and classroom objects and asks children to sort them by shape. Go through real objects at home — a dice, a box, a ball, a can, a cone-shaped cap — and name the shape of each one out loud.

Activity 2 — Roll or Slide?.
Children test which shapes roll easily (sphere, cylinder) and which do not (cube, cuboid), and discuss why — shapes with curved surfaces roll, shapes with only flat surfaces do not. Try this at home with a ball versus a small box on a tilted book.

Activity 3 — Building with Shapes.
Children use blocks of different 3D shapes to build simple structures (like a toy tower using cuboids and cylinders) and talk about which shapes stack well and which do not.

Activity 4 — Shape Hunt.
A hunt around the classroom or home for objects matching each of the five shapes, encouraging the child to point out multiple real-world examples for each shape rather than just the ones shown in the book.

Why This Chapter Matters

Recognising 3D shapes in the real world builds spatial awareness and prepares children for 2D shapes (in the next chapter, Shadow Story) and for geometry topics in later classes.

How to Use These Solutions

Work through the activities above together with the child’s own textbook pictures where relevant, talking out loud through each idea. You can download the full chapter from our Class 2 Maths NCERT book page, or browse every Class 2 subject on our Class 2 hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which 3D shapes does this chapter cover?
Cube, cuboid, sphere, cylinder, and cone.

How can a child tell if a shape will roll?
If the shape has a curved surface (like a sphere or cylinder), it can roll. If it only has flat surfaces (like a cube or cuboid), it cannot roll — it can only slide.
