What this chapter teaches.
Children discover that tracing around the flat face of a 3D object, or looking at its shadow, produces a 2D shape: a ball’s shadow is a circle, a box’s shadow is a square or rectangle. This chapter teaches children to name the four basic 2D shapes and count their sides and corners.

Activity 1 — Trace the Shadow.
Children trace the shadow or outline of 3D objects (a ball, a book, a matchbox) and name the resulting 2D shape. Try this at home with a torch and a few objects on a wall at night.

Activity 2 — Count Sides and Corners.
For each 2D shape, children count how many straight sides and how many corners it has: a circle has none of either, a triangle has 3 of each, and a square or rectangle has 4 of each.

Activity 3 — Square or Rectangle?.
Children learn the difference between a square (all four sides equal) and a rectangle (opposite sides equal, but not all four the same), by measuring or comparing sides of real objects.

Activity 4 — Shape Patterns.
Children continue or create simple repeating patterns using 2D shapes (circle, square, triangle, circle, square, triangle…), which builds early pattern-recognition skills alongside shape knowledge.
