What this chapter teaches.
Children learn that a line can be straight (like the edge of a ruler) or curved (like a rainbow), and that straight lines can point in different directions: horizontal (lying flat, left-to-right, like the horizon), vertical (standing up, like a pole), and slanting (tilted, like a ramp). Recognising these orientations helps children later when they draw shapes and read graphs.

Activity 1 — Straight or Curved?.
The textbook shows several lines and asks children to sort them as straight or curved. At home, compare a ruler’s edge (straight) with a piece of string laid loosely on the table (curved).

Activity 2 — Find the Direction.
Children look at straight lines in pictures (a clothesline, a ladder’s side rail, a ramp) and say whether each is horizontal, vertical, or slanting.

Activity 3 — Draw the Lines.
Children practise drawing a horizontal line, a vertical line, a slanting line, and a curved line using a ruler and freehand, saying the name of each type out loud as they draw it.

Activity 4 — Lines Around Us.
A hunt for horizontal, vertical, slanting, and curved lines in the classroom or at home — for example, a window frame has horizontal and vertical lines, while a rainbow or a smile is curved.
