What this chapter teaches.

Activity 1 — Collecting Data.
Children ask classmates a simple question (like ‘What is your favourite fruit?’) and record each answer with a tally mark next to the matching option.

Activity 2 — Reading Tally Marks.
Children practise counting groups of tally marks, remembering that every fifth mark crosses the earlier four, making it easy to count totals in fives (for example, |||| represents 4, and u{2118} represents 5).

Activity 3 — Most and Least.
Once data is collected, children compare the tally totals for each option to say which was chosen the most (the tallest count) and which the least (the shortest count).

Activity 4 — Picture Data.
Children also read simple picture-based data, where one picture (like one apple icon) represents one count, and answer questions like ‘how many more children chose X than Y’.
