What this chapter teaches.
Children learn to read, write, and understand 3-digit numbers using place value: the hundreds place, the tens place, and the ones place. For example, in 347, there are 3 hundreds, 4 tens, and 7 ones. This chapter teaches children to build numbers from place-value blocks (or drawings of them) and to break a number apart into its hundreds, tens, and ones (expanded form, e.g. 347 = 300 + 40 + 7).

Activity 1 — Building Numbers with Blocks.
Using place-value blocks (or pictures of hundred-squares, ten-rods, and single units), children build a given 3-digit number and count how many of each block are needed.

Activity 2 — Reading Place Value.
Given a 3-digit number, children identify the digit in the hundreds place, the tens place, and the ones place, and say what each digit is worth (for example, in 347, the 3 is worth 300).

Activity 3 — Expanded Form.
Children write a 3-digit number in expanded form, breaking it into hundreds + tens + ones (for example, 256 = 200 + 50 + 6), and also reverse the process, combining an expanded form back into the standard number.

Activity 4 — Reading and Writing Numbers.
Children practise reading 3-digit numerals aloud and writing their number names (for example, 452 is ‘four hundred fifty-two’), and vice versa.
