What this chapter teaches.
Building on the cube, cuboid, sphere, cylinder, and cone from Class 2, children now look more closely at each shape’s properties: how many flat faces it has, how many edges (where two faces meet), and how many corners (vertices). For example, a cube has 6 flat faces, 12 edges, and 8 corners, while a sphere has no flat faces, edges, or corners at all.
Activity 1 — Sorting Toys by Shape.
Children sort a set of toys (blocks, balls, boxes, cones) by which 3D shape they match, revising the shape names from Class 2.
Activity 2 — Counting Faces.
For each toy/shape, children count the number of flat surfaces (faces) it has — for example, a cuboid-shaped box has 6 faces.
Activity 3 — Counting Edges and Corners.
Children count the edges (straight lines where two faces meet) and corners (points where edges meet) of shapes like cubes and cuboids.
Activity 4 — Which Shapes Stack?.
Children test which toys stack well on top of each other (shapes with flat faces, like cubes and cuboids) and which do not (shapes with curved surfaces, like spheres and cones).
