What this chapter teaches.
Building on Class 2’s Which Season is it?, children now read a clock showing half-past (for example, half-past 4, when the minute hand is on 6), and are introduced to quarter-past and quarter-to times. They also learn to use a calendar to find dates, the day of the week for a given date, and simple duration questions (like how many days until a certain date).
Activity 1 — Reading Half-Past Times.
Children learn that when the minute hand points to 6, the time is ‘half past’ whatever hour the hour hand has just passed — for example, hour hand between 4 and 5, minute hand on 6, is half past 4.
Activity 2 — Quarter-Past and Quarter-To.
Children learn to read the clock when the minute hand is on 3 (quarter past) or on 9 (quarter to the next hour), extending their clock-reading beyond o’clock and half-past.
Activity 3 — Using a Calendar.
Children use a monthly calendar page to find what day of the week a given date falls on, and answer simple questions like how many days remain until a certain event.
Activity 4 — Daily Routine and Time.
Children connect clock times to their own daily routine (waking up, school, meals, bedtime), practising reading and stating times in a natural, everyday way.
Why This Chapter Matters
Reading a clock accurately (beyond just o’clock) and using a calendar confidently are practical, everyday skills children use immediately — for their school timetable, planning, and daily routines.
