What this chapter teaches.
Children practise more 3-digit addition and subtraction, now with a focus on estimation — rounding numbers to the nearest ten or hundred to quickly check whether a calculated answer is reasonable, before or after working it out exactly. ‘Giving away’ something connects naturally to subtraction, and ‘receiving/taking in’ connects to addition.
Activity 1 — Give and Take Word Problems.
Word problems framed around giving something away (subtraction) or receiving/collecting something (addition), such as giving away toys to charity or collecting stamps.
Activity 2 — Estimating Before Calculating.
Children round numbers to the nearest ten (or hundred) to quickly estimate an answer before doing the exact calculation — for example, estimating 298 + 405 as roughly 300 + 400 = 700 before calculating the exact 703.
Activity 3 — Checking if an Answer Makes Sense.
Using the estimate from Activity 2, children check whether their exact calculated answer is reasonably close to the estimate, catching major calculation errors.
Activity 4 — Mixed Practice.
A final round of mixed addition and subtraction problems, combining exact calculation with the new estimation-and-check habit.
Why This Chapter Matters
Estimation is a genuinely valuable lifelong skill — being able to quickly judge whether an answer is reasonable (without a calculator) helps catch mistakes early and builds number sense that goes beyond just following calculation steps.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is estimation, as taught in this chapter?
Rounding numbers to the nearest ten or hundred to quickly find an approximate answer, used to check whether an exact calculated answer is reasonable.
Why is estimating useful if you can just calculate the exact answer?
Estimating is much faster and helps catch big mistakes — if your exact answer is very different from your estimate, you know to check your work.
