What this chapter teaches.
Building on 2-digit regrouping from Class 2’s Decoration for Festival, children now add and subtract 3-digit numbers, carrying over to the tens or hundreds place in addition when needed, and borrowing from the tens or hundreds place in subtraction. The festival setting (shopping for rakhis, distributing sweets) gives these calculations a natural, real-life context.

Activity 1 — Adding 3-Digit Numbers.
Children add two 3-digit numbers, lining up hundreds, tens, and ones correctly, and carrying over where the sum in any column reaches 10 or more (for example, 246 + 178).

Activity 2 — Subtracting 3-Digit Numbers.
Children subtract one 3-digit number from another, borrowing from the tens or hundreds column when the digit being subtracted is bigger (for example, 500 – 234).

Activity 3 — Festival Shopping Problems.
Word problems set around Raksha Bandhan shopping — the total cost of rakhis and sweets bought, or how much money is left after spending a certain amount — practising addition and subtraction in context.

Activity 4 — Checking Your Answer.
Children learn a simple checking habit: after subtracting, add the answer back to the number subtracted to see if it gives the original number, catching mistakes before moving on.

Why This Chapter Matters

Confident 3-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping is used constantly in daily life (shopping, budgeting) and in every later maths topic — this chapter is where children fully extend the regrouping skill from 2-digit to 3-digit numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is 3-digit addition/subtraction different from 2-digit?
The method is the same (work from the ones column leftward, carrying or borrowing as needed), but now there is a hundreds column to handle as well as tens and ones.

What is a good way to check a subtraction answer?
Add your answer back to the number you subtracted — if it equals the original number you started with, your subtraction is correct.
