Fertilisation occurs when a sperm fuses with an egg in the fallopian tube, forming a zygote, which implants in the uterus and develops into an embryo, then a foetus, over the course of pregnancy (about 9 months in humans), nourished via the placenta.

The Menstrual Cycle

The menstrual cycle (about 28 days) involves the thickening of the uterine lining in preparation for a possible pregnancy; if fertilisation does not occur, the lining is shed as menstruation, and the cycle repeats.

Reproductive Health and Birth Control

Reproductive health includes awareness of the reproductive process, hygiene, and prevention of sexually transmitted infections. Birth control (contraceptive) methods — such as barrier methods (condoms), hormonal methods, and others — are used to prevent unintended pregnancy and, in some cases, protect against infections.
