What this chapter teaches.
Perimeter — the total length around the outside of a shape (sum of all sides); area — the amount of surface a shape covers, measured by counting unit squares on a grid; the formula Area = length × breadth for rectangles; and the formula Perimeter = sum of all sides (2 × (length + breadth) for a rectangle); and applying these ideas to quilt-piece tiling problems.

Activity 1 — Count the Squares.
Children count unit squares covered by a quilt-piece shape on grid paper to find its area directly.

Activity 2 — Measure the Border.
Children add up all the side lengths of a quilt piece to find its perimeter.

Activity 3 — Design a Quilt.
Children design their own quilt pattern from smaller square/rectangular pieces and calculate the total area covered.
