NCERT Solutions for Class 5 Maths Chapter 14: Maps and Locations
What this chapter teaches.
The four cardinal directions — East, West, North, South — and a simple trick to remember them: face the rising sun (that’s East), your left hand points North, your right hand points South, and your back is to the West; reading map symbols and keys/legends; following direction arrows on a map; and finding locations using grid coordinates, like point (1,1).
Activity 1 — Find North.
Children stand facing the direction of sunrise and use the “left hand = North” trick to identify all four directions around them.
Activity 2 — Read the Map Key.
Given a simple map with a key/legend of symbols (like a tree, a well, or a temple), children identify what each symbol represents and locate specific features.
Activity 3 — Grid Coordinates.
Children practise locating and naming points on a grid map using coordinate pairs like (1,1) or (3,2).
