What this chapter teaches.
This chapter is mostly a mixed-practice, application chapter: children solve word problems that combine several skills at once — adding up the cost of party items, sharing snacks equally among classmates, and working out change after shopping for the party — pulling together addition, subtraction, and equal sharing (division) from earlier chapters.
Activity 1 — Planning the Party Budget.
Children add up the cost of several party items (balloons, snacks, a cake) to find the total amount needed, practising multi-item addition.
Activity 2 — Sharing Party Snacks.
A given quantity of snacks or treats is shared equally among all the children at the party, practising the equal-sharing skill from Fair Share, including cases with a remainder.
Activity 3 — Working Out Change.
Children work out how much change is left after paying for party items with a given amount of money, combining addition (total cost) and subtraction (change).
Activity 4 — Mixed Word Problems.
A set of varied word problems set at the party, each requiring the child to first decide which operation(s) to use before solving — good practice for choosing the right method, not just calculating.
Why This Chapter Matters
Real-life problems rarely come labelled ‘this is an addition question’ or ‘this is a division question’ — this chapter’s mixed practice builds the more advanced skill of reading a problem and deciding which operations are needed, which is more valuable than just calculating correctly.
How to Use These Solutions
Work through the activities above together with the child’s own textbook pictures where relevant, talking out loud through each idea. You can download the full chapter from our Class 3 Maths NCERT book page, or browse every Class 3 subject on our Class 3 hub.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this chapter teach a new maths topic?
Not really — it mainly combines and applies addition, subtraction, and sharing (division) skills already learned, in mixed, real-life word problems.
Why is deciding which operation to use an important skill?
Because real-life problems do not tell you directly whether to add, subtract, or share — learning to read a problem and choose the right operation is as important as calculating correctly.
