What this chapter teaches.
Children extend their number sense from Class 1’s 1-9 range up to 100. This includes counting forward and backward within 100, reading and writing two-digit numerals, understanding what comes before/after/between a given number, and comparing two numbers to say which is greater or smaller using place value (the tens digit matters more than the ones digit).
Activity 1 — Counting to 100.
Children practise counting forward from 1 to 100, and then backward from 100 to 1, usually in a chart or number line format. At home, counting stairs, or counting down during a game, are simple ways to practise this.
Activity 2 — Before, After, and Between.
Given a number, children say what comes just before it and just after it (for example, before 47 is 46, after 47 is 48), and what number comes between two given numbers (between 46 and 48 is 47).
Activity 3 — Greater or Smaller?.
Children compare two two-digit numbers and say which is greater and which is smaller, by first comparing the tens digit, and only comparing the ones digit if the tens digits are equal. For example, 52 is greater than 48 because 5 tens is more than 4 tens.
Activity 4 — Number Names.
Children match numerals (like 23) to their number names (twenty-three) and practise writing both forms.
Why This Chapter Matters
Confidently counting, reading, writing, and comparing numbers up to 100 is the foundation for all the arithmetic (addition, subtraction) that comes later in Class 2, and for place value (hundreds, tens, ones) in Class 3.
