What this chapter teaches.
Before children learn standard units like centimetres and kilograms (in later classes), this chapter teaches them to compare lengths and weights directly and to measure using non-standard, everyday units — a handspan or footstep for length, and a simple two-pan balance (or just lifting) for weight. Children compare two objects directly (longer/shorter, heavier/lighter) and measure an object’s length in handspans or footsteps.

Activity 1 — Longer or Shorter?.
Children compare two objects directly by placing them side by side, lining up one end, to say which is longer and which is shorter.

Activity 2 — Measuring in Handspans.
Children measure the length of a table, a book, or a door using their own handspan (the distance from thumb tip to little-finger tip when the hand is spread) as the unit, and record how many handspans long the object is.

Activity 3 — Measuring in Footsteps.
Children measure the length of a room or a playground by walking heel-to-toe and counting the number of footsteps, learning that longer distances need bigger units.

Activity 4 — Heavier or Lighter?.
Children compare the weight of two objects, either by lifting them one in each hand or using a simple balance, to say which is heavier and which is lighter.
