What this chapter teaches.
Children count the number of letters in their own name and their classmates’ names, compare whose name is longer or shorter, and organise this information (for example, listing names from shortest to longest, or tallying how many names have a certain number of letters). This revisits and extends the counting and simple data-handling ideas from Class 2.
Activity 1 — Count the Letters.
Children count how many letters are in their own first name and write the number. This is an easy, personal way to start the year’s Maths with something familiar.
Activity 2 — Longer or Shorter Names.
Children compare their name’s letter count with a classmate’s to say whose name is longer, shorter, or if they are the same length.
Activity 3 — Ordering Names.
A group of names (from the class or family) is arranged in order from the shortest to the longest, based on letter count — practising ordering/sequencing with real, meaningful data.
Activity 4 — Tally of Name Lengths.
Children tally how many classmates have names of each length (for example, how many 4-letter names, how many 5-letter names), similar to the tally-mark data handling from Class 2.
Why This Chapter Matters
Using something as personal as a child’s own name makes counting and comparing numbers feel real and engaging right from the first chapter, while quietly revising counting and data-handling skills from Class 2 before the book moves into bigger numbers.
