NCERT Solutions for Class 4 Maths Chapter 9: Equal Groups

What this chapter teaches.
Multiplication as equal groups (e.g. 4 groups of 5 = 4 × 5 = 20); skip counting (counting by 2s, 5s, 10s); arrays — arranging objects in equal rows and columns to visualise multiplication; doubling (multiplying by 2); multiples of 10 and 100; and division as sharing a total into equal groups (the opposite of multiplication).

Activity 1 — Skip Counting.
Children count by 2s, 5s, or 10s (2, 4, 6, 8… or 5, 10, 15, 20…) to build multiplication fluency before formal tables.

Activity 2 — Build an Array.
Using objects arranged in rows and columns (like 3 rows of 4 counters), children see that the total (12) can be found by multiplying rows × columns.

Activity 3 — Share Into Equal Groups (Division).
Children divide a total number of objects into equal groups — for example, sharing 20 sweets equally among 4 friends, giving 5 each.

Why This Chapter Matters

This chapter turns the informal “times” idea from Class 1 into formal multiplication and division with the × and ÷ symbols and times tables — two of the most-used operations in all later maths.

How to Use These Solutions

Practise skip counting daily, and use real objects to build arrays and practise sharing into equal groups. Download the full chapter from our Class 4 Maths NCERT book page, or browse the Class 4 hub.
