NCERT Solutions for Class 4 Maths Chapter 10: Elephants, Tigers, and Leopards
What this chapter teaches.
Adding and subtracting larger numbers with regrouping (carrying/borrowing); reading and comparing numbers in a data table (for example, animal populations by state); solving word problems using keywords like “more than”, “together”, and “total” to decide whether to add or subtract; and mental maths strategies for larger numbers.
Activity 1 — Read the Table.
Children are shown a table of real animal population figures by state and answer questions like “which state has more?” or “what is the combined total?”
Activity 2 — Combine the Populations.
Using addition, children combine population figures from two or more states to find a total (for example, combining elephant populations from two states).
Activity 3 — Compare and Find the Difference.
Using subtraction, children find how many more animals one state has compared to another.
Why This Chapter Matters
This chapter connects arithmetic to real data and general knowledge (wildlife conservation), and builds the skill of choosing the right operation (addition or subtraction) based on the wording of a problem.
How to Use These Solutions
Practise reading real data tables (from newspapers, almanacs, or school resources) and asking “more than/less than/total” questions about them. Download the full chapter from our Class 4 Maths NCERT book page, or browse the Class 4 hub.
