NCERT Solutions for Class 4 Maths Chapter 6: Measuring Length

What this chapter teaches.
Measuring objects using a ruler or measuring tape, in centimetres and metres; comparing the lengths of different objects; estimating length before measuring, then checking with a tool; and perimeter — the total length all the way around a shape (found by adding up the lengths of all its sides).

Activity 1 — Measure Classroom Objects.
Children measure real objects (a book, a desk, a pencil) using a ruler or tape and record the length in cm or m. This is genuinely hands-on — the exact measurement depends on the real object being measured, so it’s best done directly rather than guessed.

Activity 2 — Estimate First, Then Measure.
Before measuring, children guess the length of an object, then check with a ruler — building a sense of what a centimetre or metre actually looks like.

Activity 3 — Find the Perimeter.
Given a shape (like a rectangle) with its side lengths, children add up all the sides to find the total distance around it — for example, a rectangle with sides 5 cm, 3 cm, 5 cm, and 3 cm has a perimeter of 5+3+5+3 = 16 cm.

Why This Chapter Matters

Standard units (cm, m) give measurements that are the same no matter who measures — unlike the handspan used in Class 1 — and perimeter is the first step toward later area and geometry work.

How to Use These Solutions

Practise measuring real household objects and calculating the perimeter of rectangular items like a table top or a picture frame. Download the full chapter from our Class 4 Maths NCERT book page, or browse the Class 4 hub.
