NCERT Solutions for Class 4 Maths Chapter 5: Sharing and Measuring
What this chapter teaches.
Parts and wholes — dividing an object into equal parts; one-half (½), meaning one of two equal parts; one-quarter (¼), meaning one of four equal parts; comparing fractions (which part is bigger, ½ or ¼?); and how sharing changes as the number of people increases.
Activity 1 — Fold and Share.
Using a piece of paper, children fold it into 2 equal parts to make halves, or 4 equal parts to make quarters, and label each part. This is a genuinely hands-on activity — try it with real paper at home, checking that each fold makes truly equal parts.
Activity 2 — Share the Dhokla/Dosa.
The book uses food-sharing scenarios (splitting a dhokla or dosa among 2 or 4 friends) to show what ½ and ¼ look like in a real, familiar context.
Activity 3 — Which Is Bigger?
Children compare ½ and ¼ of the same-sized object and see that ½ is bigger than ¼ — because splitting something into fewer, bigger parts means each part is larger.
Why This Chapter Matters
This is the first formal introduction to fractions — understanding ½ and ¼ through real sharing builds the foundation for all later fraction work (addition, comparison, equivalent fractions) in higher classes.
How to Use These Solutions
Practise folding paper and sharing real food or objects into halves and quarters at home — this chapter is best learned hands-on. Download the full chapter from our Class 4 Maths NCERT book page, or browse the Class 4 hub.
