NCERT Solutions for Class 4 Maths Chapter 11: Fun with Symmetry
What this chapter teaches.
A line of symmetry — an imaginary line that divides a shape into two halves that are exact mirror images of each other; identifying which shapes/letters/pictures are symmetrical and which are not; finding all the lines of symmetry a shape has (some shapes, like a circle, have many; others, like a scalene triangle, have none); and completing the other half of a symmetrical picture, given one half.
Activity 1 — Fold and Check.
Children fold a shape along a line and check whether the two halves match exactly — if they do, that line is a line of symmetry. This is a genuinely hands-on activity: use real paper shapes and actually fold them to check.
Activity 2 — Complete the Mirror Half.
Given one half of a symmetrical picture (like half a butterfly), children draw the missing mirror-image half. Work through the specific picture in the book together, checking each point is reflected the same distance from the line.
Activity 3 — Symmetry in Nature.
Children look for symmetry in real things — leaves, butterflies, flowers, and human faces are common examples.
Why This Chapter Matters
Symmetry appears throughout art, architecture, and nature, and understanding it builds spatial reasoning and observation skills that support later geometry.
How to Use These Solutions
Fold real paper shapes to test for symmetry, and go on a “symmetry hunt” around the house or garden looking for symmetrical leaves, objects, or patterns. Download the full chapter from our Class 4 Maths NCERT book page, or browse the Class 4 hub.

An imaginary line that divides a shape into two halves that are exact mirror images of each other.
Does every shape have a line of symmetry?
No — some shapes (like a scalene triangle) have none, while others (like a circle) have many.
