Revision Notes for Class 7 Maths Chapter 3: A Peek Beyond the Point

Condensed revision notes for Class 7 Maths Chapter 3: A Peek Beyond the Point – Ganita Prakash textbook. These Class 7 Mathematics Chapter 3 notes are ideal for quick revision just before exams.

  • Decimal place values (after the point): tenths (1/10), hundredths (1/100), thousandths (1/1000).
  • Key conversions: 1000 thousandths = 1 unit; 100 thousandths = 1 tenth; 10 thousandths = 1 hundredth; 100 tenths = 1 ten.
  • Comparing decimals: compare the whole-number part first, then compare digit-by-digit after the decimal point (tenths, then hundredths, etc.) — more digits does NOT mean a bigger number (e.g. 0.9 > 0.123456789).
  • Equal decimals: trailing zeros after the last nonzero digit don’t change the value (4.5 = 4.50 = 4.500); leading zeros before the whole-number part also don’t matter (4.5 = 04.5).
  • Adding/subtracting decimals: line up the decimal points (same place values in the same column) before adding or subtracting.
  • Estimation check: the sum of two decimals always lies between (sum of whole-number parts) and (that sum + 2), since each decimal part is less than 1.
  • Unit conversions: 1 m = 100 cm = 1,000 mm; 1 km = 1,000 m = 1,000,000 mm; 1 rupee = 100 paise.
  • Fraction↔decimal: 1/2=0.5, 1/4=0.25, 3/4=0.75, 1/5=0.2, 4/5=0.8 — useful benchmark values.
