Factors and Multiples
Q: What is the difference between a factor and a multiple?
A: A factor of a number divides it exactly with no remainder (e.g. 4 is a factor of 12). A multiple of a number is obtained by multiplying it by a whole number (e.g. 12, 24, 36 are multiples of 12).
Prime and Composite Numbers
Q: List all the prime numbers up to 30.
A: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29 — a total of 10 prime numbers. A prime number has exactly two factors (1 and itself); a composite number has more than two factors.
Finding the HCF
Q: Find the HCF of 24 and 36 using the factor method.
A: Factors of 24: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24. Factors of 36: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 36. The greatest common factor is 12, so HCF(24, 36) = 12.
Finding the LCM
Q: Find the LCM of 4 and 6 by listing multiples.
A: Multiples of 4: 4, 8, 12, 16… Multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18… The smallest common multiple is 12, so LCM(4, 6) = 12.
