Extra Questions for Class 7 Maths Chapter 1: Large Numbers Around Us – HOTS

Fresh HOTS-level extra questions for Class 7 Maths Chapter 1 (Large Numbers Around Us), with numbers not found in the NCERT book. Full worked solutions included. These Class 7 Mathematics Chapter 1 important questions are handy for last-minute exam practice.

Q1 (Indian vs International conversion). Write 7,08,45,231 in both Indian and International systems, with words.
Solution: Indian: 7,08,45,231 — Seven crore eight lakh forty-five thousand two hundred thirty-one. International: 70,845,231 — Seventy million eight hundred forty-five thousand two hundred thirty-one.

Q2 (Estimation, HOTS). A stadium’s attendance over 3 days was 84,532, 91,206, and 76,890. Estimate the total by rounding each to the nearest ten-thousand, then find the exact total.
Solution: Rounded: 80,000+90,000+80,000 = 2,50,000 (estimate). Exact: 84,532+91,206+76,890 = 2,52,628 — close to the estimate.

Q3 (Assertion–Reason). Assertion (A): 5 crore is greater than 45 million. Reason (R): 1 crore = 10 million.
Solution: R is true (1 crore = 1,00,00,000 = 10,000,000 = 10 million). Using R: 5 crore = 50 million, which IS greater than 45 million, so A is also true, and R correctly explains A. Both true, R explains A.

Q4 (Place value expression). Express 3,08,047 as a sum of place values, and write it in words.
Solution: 3,08,047 = (3×1,00,000) + (0×10,000) + (8×1,000) + (0×100) + (4×10) + (7×1) = 3,00,000+8,000+47. In words: Three lakh eight thousand forty-seven.

Q5 (Multiplication shortcut). Use a factoring shortcut to compute 250 × 44 × 4.
Solution: Group as 250×4 = 1000, so 1000×44 = 44,000.

Q6 (Comparing across systems). Which is larger: 72 lakh or 7 million? By how much (in the Indian system)?
Solution: 72 lakh = 72,00,000. 7 million = 70,00,000. 72 lakh is larger, by 72,00,000 − 70,00,000 = 2,00,000 (2 lakh).

Q7 (Digit puzzle). Using the digits 2, 4, 6, 8 exactly once, form the largest and smallest possible 4-digit numbers, and find their difference.
Solution: Largest = 8642. Smallest = 2468. Difference = 8642−2468 = 6174.

Q8 (Reasonable estimation). A library has 1,25,000 books. If a librarian can scan 1 book every 3 seconds, roughly how many hours would it take to scan the whole collection (8-hour workdays)?
Solution: Total seconds = 1,25,000 × 3 = 3,75,000 seconds. In hours: 3,75,000 ÷ 3600 ≈ 104 hours, or about 13 workdays (104÷8 = 13).

Q9 (Spot the error). A student writes: “45,00,000 in the International system is forty-five hundred thousand.” Correct this.
Solution: 45,00,000 (Indian) = 4,500,000 (International grouping). This should be read as “four million five hundred thousand” in the International system, not “forty-five hundred thousand” (which isn’t standard International-system phrasing, even though numerically 45 hundred-thousand does equal 4.5 million).

Q10 (Multi-step word problem). A company’s revenue was ₹38,45,000 last year and ₹52,10,000 this year. By how much did revenue increase, and what is this increase as an estimate rounded to the nearest lakh?
Solution: Exact increase = 52,10,000 − 38,45,000 = ₹13,65,000. Rounded to the nearest lakh: ₹14,00,000 (since 65,000 rounds up).
