Class 10 Maths Chapter 14 Probability Revision Notes

Class 10 Maths Chapter 14 – Probability: Quick Revision Notes

  • This chapter covers theoretical (classical) probability only, not experimental probability
  • P(E) = (favourable outcomes) / (total equally likely outcomes)
  • 0 ≤ P(E) ≤ 1 always
  • P(E)=0 → impossible event; P(E)=1 → sure/certain event
  • P(E) + P(not E) = 1
  • Sum of probabilities of all elementary events = 1
  • Coin toss: 1 coin → 2 outcomes; 2 coins → 4 (HH,HT,TH,TT); n coins → 2ⁿ outcomes
  • Single die: 6 outcomes; two dice together: 36 outcomes, sums range 2 to 12
  • Deck of cards: 52 total, 4 suits × 13 cards, 12 face cards (4 each of J/Q/K), 26 red + 26 black
  • “Removed and not replaced” problems reduce BOTH favourable and total counts for the next draw
  • Reverse (unknown count) problems: set up P(E)=favourable/total as an equation and solve algebraically
  • Area-based probability: P(E) = favourable area / total area
  • Current 2026-27 syllabus: only Exercise 14.1 (25 Q) — the older Exercise 14.2 has been removed
