NCERT Solutions for Class 4 Maths Chapter 4: Thousands Around Us
What this chapter teaches.
Place value up to thousands (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands); reading and writing 4-digit numbers correctly, using a comma to separate thousands from hundreds (for example, 2,345 is “two thousand three hundred forty-five”); understanding that 999 is the largest 3-digit number and 1000 is the smallest 4-digit number (ten hundreds make one thousand); and using number lines, arrow cards, and place-value tokens to build and break down large numbers.
Activity 1 — Build the Number.
Using place-value tokens or arrow cards (cards for thousands, hundreds, tens, ones that overlap to build a number), children build 4-digit numbers and read them aloud.
Activity 2 — Read and Write.
Children practise reading numbers like 3,central digit combinations aloud, and writing the numeral for a number said in words (for example, writing “4,678” for “four thousand six hundred seventy-eight”).
Activity 3 — Where Does It Go? (Place Value).
Given a number like 5,283, children identify what each digit represents: 5 thousands, 2 hundreds, 8 tens, 3 ones.
Why This Chapter Matters
Understanding place value beyond 1000 is essential for all later arithmetic with large numbers — addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division all rely on correctly understanding what each digit represents.
